I admit, I'm a sucker for epic poetry, and Virgil is among the best. His Roman sensibilities are slightly less foreign to my mind than the older, Greek Homer, and that helps when you're reading something this difficult. But as our parents used to say, whatever kills you makes you stronger, and Virgil didn't quite manage to kill me. (Fitzgerald's translation is also very good; he keeps the verse structure and still manages to keep it readable. His notes at the end are also ver helpful.)
